Learning Strategies

Top 3 Study Skills I'm Good At:

  1. Following the SQ3R method: Survey | Question | Read | Recite | Review
I didn't even know I followed this until I examined myself with it.

  2. Minimizing Distractions While Studying: I’m good at selecting quiet, distraction-free environments like my study room at the corner of my house so not many people walk by throughout the day allowing me to focus deeply on the material.

  3. Looking for main ideas in paragraphs and extracting key details.

Top 3 Areas I Need to Improve On:

  1. Creating/Following a Schedule:
I am not good at creating a schedule and even worse at following it. I'll try it for a day but then things pop up and I get inconsistent. I feel like I can't keep a good schedule when studying formally like school. However, this class is training us like we are working a job. Therefore, it is getting easier to follow a schedule as if we are needing to meet deadlines so I am enjoying it.

  2. Time management during studying periods:
I tell myself that I will take breaks and do things between studying to avoid burnout but then end up sitting through until I finish the assignment. For me, there is no better feeling than that feeling when you figure something out in one sitting. I do this with any task I'm given. When my home gym equipment came I sat there for the whole weekend assembling it even though I messed up multiple times and had to disassemble and assemble a couple times.

  3. Avoiding last minute studying:
Most of my days are filled with different tasks whether it has to do with work, life, religious, school and other studies. Since I have deadlines to make every day, I have to run on a "due today, do today" schedule. I'm trying my best to change this habit as I pursue this degree. This week I managed to do much better than last week and finished most assignments a day or two before their respective deadlines.

Time Management

Project Management Basics

- The presentations provided an overview of key project management principles and tools. The introduction defined a project as a temporary effort aimed at creating a unique product, service, or result, emphasizing the importance of clear goals, timelines, and cost management. The Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) highlighted breaking down projects into smaller, manageable tasks to streamline planning and execution. The Gantt Chart showcased how to visually track schedules, dependencies, and deadlines to ensure project timelines are met. All these concepts and tools together, show how effective planning, monitoring, and successful project completion is done.

Previous Capstones

Pick at least three presentations, and keep an entry in your learning journal on your reflection, such as (but not limited to) what was type of the project?  Was the project well done?  How do you like the presentation?  Can the project and presentation be improved?

Presentation 1: OtterParsing

  • What was the type of project?

Their program processed files, specifically resume's, and then saved it to a database. The employer can then search and find a potential candidate.

  • Was the project well done?

Yes, the UI was nice and everything ran very smoothly. The app made sense and worked perfectly.

  • How do you like the presentation?

I thought it was a pretty good idea and it was presented nicely as well. They also had a nice background sound to make it more engaging.

  • Can the project and presentation be improved?

Yes. Though, it was pretty good, I think the presenters could've been more engaging. It did come off as a bit boring and that is why I mentioned the background since it really stood out. They could've spoke a little more enthusiastically.

Presentation 2: US Naval Research Laboratory

  • What was the type of project?

Their project provides a high-level overview of vulnerabilities in code, simplifying complex information for non-technical stakeholders. This enables informed decision-making, prioritization of critical security issues and more collaboration between technical and non-technical teams. By identifying and summarizing code vulnerabilities, the project supports data-driven cybersecurity decisions and strengthens overall security.

  • Was the project well done?

Yes, I thought it was a cool idea as cybersecurity is getting pretty big now.

  • How do you like the presentation?

Very engaging presentation. Nicely designed slides as well.

  • Can the project and presentation be improved?

I don't think so honestly. It was pretty good.

Presentation 3: dKOMP

  • What was the type of project?

dKOMP is an organizational management tool which is the first of its kind to implement Elliott Jaques Requisite Organization methodology. dKOMP's aim is to provide managers and business owners a user friendly way to manage their employees and roles.
  • Was the project well done?

    Yes, worked seamlessly.

  • How do you like the presentation?

Very engaging presentation. Nicely showcased each part of their project making sure to let the viewers fully take in the information being presented.

  • Can the project and presentation be improved?

No, this was very nicely done.

Week 2 Summary -

This week we focused on enhancing collaboration, critical thinking, and academic writing skills.

Below is exactly what we did and learned.

  • Completed an Industry Analysis Draft and participating in peer review, making sure to convey constructive feedback and improvement.
  • Explored Effective Study Strategies through discussions, highlighting personalized approaches to learning.
  • Engaging with CollabU-Module 2, fostering teamwork and communication skills.
  • Met with instructors.
  • Completed quizzes on Academic Writing and Peer Review Guidelines to reinforce the understanding of best practices.
I was feeling very stressed out and overwhelmed this whole week about these assignments but honestly feel really accomplished now that I've completed everything. I learned a lot and am striving to do even better next week. This course is helping me reinforce a lot of knowledge that I haven't implemented in a while.

  1. Suhaib,
I think having a more detailed activity log, such as listing when your work is, or having set times for school work, would benefit you.
I do like that you included time for breaks in your activity log. Remembering to take breaks is important.

    1. Hello Suhaib,

The week for the module isn't entirely accurate, as the module begins on the 15th of Wednesday and ends on the 21st of Tuesday. Also, the activity log doesn't seem to have all the assignments you did throughout the module, as you could have gone into specifics on what assignments you were doing at the time. Furthermore, what exactly are you doing on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, given that you could have gone into detail about team meetings, assignments, work or personal breaks with family to illustrate why there isn't any activity during those days. In the end, having more detail over what you are doing on certain days would be helpful to you in understanding how you spend your time.
